Alt+F4 not working on Mac? Close windows and check your function keys

On a Mac, start with Command+W to close the current window or tab, or Command+Q to quit the app. Alt+F4 is a Windows shortcut, so pressing it on an unconfigured Mac does not necessarily close anything. A second issue is that the top-row key may send a system action instead of F4.
1. Try the macOS method first
Look for Close in the app’s File menu and Quit in its application menu. Their displayed shortcuts tell you what that app supports. Command+W commonly closes the front document or tab; quitting is a separate action. In a browser, check File › Close Window if you want the entire window rather than one tab. 2. Understand what can get in the way
Alt is labelled Option on an Apple keyboard. Changing that label does not make macOS interpret Option+F4 as the Windows close command. Also, Apple’s top row often controls features such as Spotlight instead of delivering an ordinary function key.
Try Fn (Globe)+Option+F4 when you need to send an actual F4 combination. Alternatively, open System Settings › Keyboard › Keyboard Shortcuts › Function Keys and enable standard function keys. External keyboards may use their own Fn lock or vendor settings. Apple explains the function-row setting here. Sending F4 correctly still requires an app or mapping that gives Alt+F4 a close action.
3. Use Alt+F4 with Windsify
- Install Windsify and allow Accessibility. In General, enable Windows keyboard shortcuts.
- Open an ordinary test window with no unsaved work. Press Alt+F4 on a Windows keyboard, or Option+F4 on an Apple keyboard; include Fn when your keyboard needs it.
- Windsify maps the combination to a close action. In recognized browsers, it targets the browser window rather than just its active tab. In other apps, the app’s own close-command behavior still applies.
Alt+F4 is in the Free keyboard layer. Windsify accepts F4 events both with and without the Fn flag, but it cannot translate a normal F4 event that never reaches it. Closing a window also does not necessarily quit its app.
If it still does not work: use Shortcut Help
- Open Windsify’s Shortcut Help tab and choose the Alt+F4 test.
- Click Test shortcut, then press the combination while the Windsify window remains active.
- Read the result: it can distinguish a recognized shortcut, a different key, a special-function event, missing Accessibility permission, or a paused keyboard layer.
The test is a safe preview: it does not close a window or send the mapped command. A recognized result confirms the mapping in the preview, not that every target app will handle it identically. If the issue happens only in one app, mention that app when you contact support.
