Delete versus Backspace on Mac: text and Finder file shortcuts

The delete key on a compact Apple keyboard normally acts as Backspace, removing text to the left of the cursor. A separate Windows Delete key normally removes text on the right. The key label alone does not tell you what should happen to a selected file.
1. Use native Mac deletion first

In TextEdit, place the cursor at AB|CD without typing the bar. Backspace removes B; forward Delete removes C. See Apple’s shortcut reference and file deletion guide.
2. Why Delete does not remove a file
Native Finder uses Command+delete for Move to Trash. It does not adopt Windows file behavior merely because you connect a Windows keyboard. A file list, filename editor and terminal are separate contexts. Keyboard hardware can also send different key events for similar labels.

Finder must be frontmost and focus must be outside editable text. While editing a filename, Backspace still edits text. Do not assume the Apple Backspace key labeled delete is the dedicated Windows forward Delete key.
- Enable Windows keyboard shortcuts, grant Accessibility access and confirm an active Pro trial or license.
- Select a disposable practice file in Finder after finishing any filename editing.
- Use a dedicated Windows Delete key to test Move to Trash, then inspect Trash. There is no need to test immediate deletion.
Finder file rules belong to Pro; basic keyboard editing is included in Free.
If the result is unexpected
Pause the keyboard layer and compare the native command. Check file selection, text focus and whether a terminal or remote desktop has control. Windsify does not bypass permissions or system confirmation. A practice file in Trash can be restored with Put Back; immediate deletion does not offer that recovery path.
