Rename files on Mac: Return versus the F2 shortcut

Finder normally uses Return to rename a selected file. F2 is not its built-in rename shortcut. Windsify Pro adds the Windows pattern of F2 to rename and Return to open a selected item.
1. Try native Finder renaming
- Select a practice file in Finder.
- Press Return and edit the name, keeping its extension unless you intend to change the file type association.
- Press Return again to confirm, or use Rename from the file’s contextual menu.
Open selected items with Command+O or Command+Down. If Windsify’s keyboard layer is already enabled, pause it when comparing native Return behavior. See Apple’s renaming guide.
2. Why F2 changes brightness
Some keyboards use their top row for hardware features. Try Fn+F2 or review System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Function Keys. External keyboards may have their own Fn lock or Win/Mac mode. Sending a standard F2 still does not make native Finder use Windows rename behavior.
Renaming several items is a separate task: Finder’s built-in batch rename command may be more suitable than a single-file shortcut.
3. Rename with Windsify Pro
- Enable Windows keyboard shortcuts, grant Accessibility access and confirm an active Pro trial or license.
- Select a file in Finder without leaving a filename or another text field in editing mode.
- Press F2. If your keyboard sends a brightness event, try Fn+F2 as appropriate for the keyboard.
- Edit the name and press Return to confirm. Outside text editing, Return opens the selected item.
The mapping applies to Finder file operations, not every application’s F2 key. Filename editing remains a text-editing context.
If renaming fails
Check permissions, name conflicts and the active text field. Try Finder’s menu command on the same file first. Shortcut Help can show the received key, but its in-app preview cannot prove how Finder exposes focus. This file-operation mapping belongs to Pro and is not included in Free.
