How to screenshot a disappearing menu, tooltip or Spotlight on Mac

You line up the exact menu, tooltip, hover state or Spotlight result you need, press a screenshot shortcut — and the thing you wanted to capture disappears. This happens when the transient interface depends on keyboard focus, pointer position or an open popover that changes as the screenshot workflow begins. macOS has a built-in timer that solves many cases. Windsify Pro adds a faster option for the difficult ones: freeze the visible screen first, then use the native macOS selection interface.

For an ordinary menu, try the native shortcut first

Apple supports capturing a menu directly: open the menu, press Shift+Command+4, then drag over the menu items you want. If a hover state or popover disappears, use the macOS timer

1. Press Shift+Command+5 to open Screenshot.
2. Choose the capture mode you need, then open Options and select a timer delay.
3. Start the capture, then restore the menu, tooltip, hover state or other temporary interface during the countdown.
4. Let macOS take the screenshot when the timer ends.

This is the best built-in workaround when opening the screenshot controls dismisses the UI you want. It costs a few seconds, but it requires no extra software.

For the exact moment on screen, freeze it before selecting

Because the transient interface is already preserved in the snapshot, you can select it even if the live Spotlight panel, Apps panel, tooltip or popover would normally disappear.

1. Put the temporary interface on screen exactly as you want it.
2. Press Ctrl+Shift+4.
3. Windsify freezes the visible screen and hands you the familiar macOS selection interaction.
4. Drag over the area you want. The frozen background is removed when selection finishes or is cancelled.

Frozen capture requires macOS Screen Recording permission. The captured pixels are kept in memory for the selection session rather than uploaded by Windsify.

Why does the UI disappear in the first place?

Menus, tooltips, hover states and search panels are not all ordinary windows. Some are temporary interface layers whose visibility depends on the current focus, pointer location or active interaction. Starting another command can change that state before the screenshot is taken. Holding Control to copy a normal macOS screenshot to the clipboard changes the destination of the screenshot; it does not freeze a transient interface.

Which method should you use?
